I have never played BG1 or BG2, but I absolutely love DOS2. This game plays and feels like D&D flavor of DOS2, I’m currently in the first act, and it has been great so far.

I’m not a fan of resting in this game. The concept of resting comes from D&D, but it doesn’t seem to translate well into a computer game. I can take a rest after 1 or 2 fights to recover HP and spells, and I never run out of camping supplies, so resting feels irrelevant.

At the beginning of the game, I avoided resting to save supplies and the story plot told you to hurry up, or you might end up as a mind slayer. Then I found out that not enough rests could actually skip stories and break some romances. So I restarted and do long rest whenever I could.

The difficulty before level 5 and after was huge. At level 5, both Karlach and Lae’Zel have an extra attack, which makes killing a boss in 1 or 2 turns feasible.

I played as a bard, and the game didn’t let me change spells except via respec or level up. The respec cost is only 100 golds, but it felt redundant and tedious.

I finished the game after almost 6 months of playing on and off.

Highlights

  • Bullied a squirrel.
  • Let Volo operate on my eye, due to morbid curiosity. The scenes were horrifying, I laughed throughout the entire thing. At the end, he ran off while I got a permanent buff. Worth it?
  • I love the theme of growth for all characters. You are not your parents/guardians/gods. You have a choice to pursue your own path.
  • The boss fights so far have been great.
    • The difference between the first and second fights against the hag showed how far my characters have progressed.
    • Act 1 concludes with defending against a horde of goblins.
    • Raphael’s fight, when the music starts, is absolutely phenomenon
    • The final boss is just ok though.
  • I went to hell with Karlach as my ending.
