Keyboards
Before 2022
I used basic full-size keyboards, none left a lasting impression. After acquiring my first laptop, I transitioned to using laptop keyboards exclusively.
2022
When I started a new job, my laptop keyboard proved inadequate as extended typing sessions caused finger fatigue. This led me to purchase a Redragon K552 TKL keyboard because it was cheap and had great Amazon reviews rating. I chose the TKL form factor since I rarely used the numpad while working on laptops.
The K552 served me well for two years until some keys began exhibiting issues with repeating keystrokes and intermittent failures. Given its low price, it provided excellent value.
2024
My keyboard journey took an interesting turn when I discovered the Wooting 60HE+. Initially drawn to its gaming capabilities, it became my primary keyboard as I played games less frequently.
I opted for the pre-built version, being new to keyboard customization. The upgrade from my previous keyboard was significant, it was more responsive and occupied smaller desk space.
It was a learning curve with the small 60% layout, particularly for programming tasks due to the absence of function keys, tilde, and editing keys. I adapted by using a custom layout that maps these keys when holding down the Caps Lock button.
2025
I missed the function keys and editing keys, so I bought a 75% board from Amazon after watching multiple Youtube reviews. Despite its impressive build quality and weight, it exhibited inconsistent key registration and input lag. While the typing experience was pleasant, I realized I never paid attention to how the typing sounds. Maybe the sound didn't matter to me atm. In the end, I returned it.
Further research revealed that 60HE+ uses a magnetic hall effect switch, which I learned is distinct from traditional mechanical switches. HE switches enables adjustable actuation points and doesn't require full key presses for activation.
This knowledge led me back to the 60HE+, which I upgraded with Geon Raw switches and new keycaps. While aluminum cases exist, I'm still using the stock plastic case because it's light.
